Flyers Win Game 1, But Lose in Four to NKU

Oct. 24, 2003

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Lewis women's volleyball team looked poised to win on the road at Northern Kentucky for the second straight season after winning game 1 30-24, but the slumbering Norse were awakened and won the final three games easily.

Northern Kentucky (18-10, 9-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference) has never lost at home in consecutive seasons to the Flyers, and a 24-30, 30-21, 30-11, 30-17 defeat prevented Lewis (13-8, 5-4 GLVC) from accomplishing the feat.

Lewis hit .409 in game 1 and outscored the Norse 11-5 following the final tie of the game at 19-all.

NKU began to turn the tide with a 20-10 run to open game 2 and a demoralizing 20-5 run from the outset of game 3.

Game 4 was tied at 9-all, but an 8-0 Norse scoring run effectively sealed the game.

Lewis was led by senior Katie Gilman's 16 kills, 12 digs, three blocks and .351 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Lisa Paasch tied Gilman with a team-high 16 kills while adding nine digs.

Removing Gilman and Paasch from the final stats, the Flyers combined to hit .031 as a team.

NKU outhit the Flyers .370-.163 and outdug them 73-52.

Gilman's 12 digs leave her nine shy of 1,000 for her career. She also needs 72 kills to reach 1,500 career kills.

The loss drops the Flyers into a tie for third with Wisconsin-Parkside in the GLVC Green Division. Lewis remains on the road and will face Bellarmine Saturday, October 25 at noon. The team will look to improve on its 28-4 all-time series lead over the Knights who are just 4-21 overall and 1-10 in GLVC play this season.
