ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - In a repeat performance of its Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament victory over Lewis in Romeoville, Northern Kentucky swept the Flyers 30-21, 30-22, 30-28. The meeting was the first between the schools since the GLVC Tournament semifinal last season. Lewis (9-5, 2-1 in GLVC) held a lead in the first game, but a series of rallies appeared to turn the momentum for not only the game, but the match. With the score tied at 12, NKU (12-6, 5-0 in GLVC) managed to win consecutive points following wild rallies that saw both teams produce near preposterous digs to keep the point alive. The Norse gathered the momentum from that swing and outscored Lewis 18-9 through the rest of the game. NKU was dominant for most of game 2 and for much of game 3, before Lewis staged a valiant comeback in game 3. Trailing 17-12, Katie Gilman helped spark a Lewis run with an ace and several tough serves that eventually allowed the Flyers to tie the game at 21-all. The teams traded sideouts for much of the final nine points, when Cammi Welter knocked down a kill for a 29-28 Norse lead. Lynne Fischesser ended the match with a service ace. Gilman led the Flyers with 16 kills, 15 digs, three blocks and a .341 hitting percentage. Abby Hodge and Maggie Haen recorded 11 digs each for the Flyer defense. Kristin Koralewski paced NKU with a match-high 22 kills, 21 digs and .488 hitting percentage. Nicole Salisbury added 14 kills with zero errors in 34 attempts. NKU setter Marcela Cunha led the offense to a .348 attack percentage while passing out 50 assists in three games. Lewis' next match will be Oct. 1 when it hosts Saint Xavier at 7 p.m. |
