ROMEOVILLE, Ill.-The Lewis University softball team ran its winning streak to 10 straight games following a doubleheader sweep of conference foe Missouri-St. Louis. The Flyers (25-9, 6-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference) beat UMSL (15-16, 3-5 GLVC) 4-2 and 5-1, respectively. Lewis scrapped through game 1 to pull out the victory. UMSL outhit the Flyers 11-6, but Lewis got the clutch hits when it needed them. In the first inning, Elaina Ktistou reached on a one-out bunt single and proceeded to steal second base. Two batters later, Amy Roberts dropped a single into right field that scored Ktistou and gave Lewis a 1-0 lead. UMSL tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning on a Molly Buyat RBI single. Lewis answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added an insurance run in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Robin Martz picked a ball nearly off the dirt and plopped it over the pitcher's head for an RBI infield single. The Flyers picked up its second run of the inning on an RBI fielder's choice from Ktistou. In the sixth, Kalynn Russell ripped a double down the left field line that scored Crystal Bowen from second base. Kristen Porzel (5-1) pitched two innings of relief and earned the win. Mary Jaszczak recorded her first save of the season by pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Carrie Paradzinski started and threw the first four innings before giving way to Porzel. Game 2 saw Bowen complete a solid week with a 2-for-3, 3-RBI performance. All three of her RBIs came with two outs; she had an RBI single in the fourth inning that proved to be the game winner and had a two-run single in the sixth inning. In the eight games Lewis played this week, Bowen had a hit in every game to bat .480 (12-for-25) with six runs, five RBI and four stolen bases. Jaszczak (8-3) followed up yesterday's perfect game with a complete-game, five-hit performance. She struck out three and allowed just two runners to reach third base. The Flyers will be on the road for six games next week as the team plays doubleheaders against Ferris State, Saint Joseph's and Indianapolis on consecutive days beginning Thursday. |
