Jaszczak Shuts Down GVSU; Davis, Martz Pace Flyer Offense

March 27, 2004

Box Score

EAST PEORIA, Ill. - Lewis upset nationally ranked Grand Valley State for the second time in as many weeks with a 4-1 victory at the Great Lakes Region Showdown. The Flyers capitalized on three unearned runs in the win.

The Flyers (16-9) cracked the scoring column first with a single tally in the third inning. Senior Stacy Davis led off with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Stacy Beaman. Freshman Christina Willis sacrificed her to second prior to consecutive hits from Robin Martz and Elaina Ktistou. Beaman scored from third easily after a Ktistou blooper plopped in behind second base.

Grand Valley evened the score at 1-1 all with an unearned run in its half of the third inning. Miranda Titler reached on an error and moved to third after a throwing error by Davis. Titler brought home the Lakers' (14-4) only run three batters later following an RBI single from Jen Goldschmeding.

Martz ripped an RBI double to drive in the eventual game-winning run in the fifth. The Flyers added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning as well. Amy Roberts and Debbie Peterson scored an unearned run each to provide Lewis with some cushion heading into the final innings. Davis had an RBI single that brought home Peterson, while Roberts scored from third on a failed pick off attempt by Grand Valley's catcher trickled into the outfield.

Davis paced Lewis with three hits, an RBI and a run scored. Martz added two hits, a double and an RBI.

In the circle, Mary Jaszczak (5-3) went the distance striking out six and holding the Lakers to six hits. She didn't allow an earned run and allowed just two runners past second base.
