Softball Beats Saginaw Valley after Resuming Suspended Game

March 20, 2005

Box Score

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.--16 and a half hours after it started, the Lewis University softball team finished its 6-3 victory over region foe Saginaw Valley State.

The teams played into the top of the seventh inning yesterday before darkness suspended play until 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Four batters and three outs later, the Flyers (9-10) earned the win.

Ashley LeGrand picked up her sixth win of the season upping her record to 6-1. She went 5 2/3 innings striking out three and allowing four hits. She gave up three earned runs including a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Shannon Roney pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to register the save.

The Flyers utilized a five-run second inning to gain the upper hand in the contest. A pair of errors by Saginaw Valley pitcher Karen Ray paved the way to the big inning.

Carla Musillo began the rally with a one-out walk. Beth Shelus then reached on a fielder's choice where Ray looked to second base and then threw wildly to first. Christina Willis then popped up a squeeze bunt, but Ray dropped it and Musillo scored. Robin Martz singled home Shelus, and then Yusko delivered a two-run double. Kristy Vanek capped the rally with an RBI single.

Vanek helped the Flyers add an insurance run in the sixth when she drove in a run with a ground out.

Lewis hosts the second day of the Lewis Invitational Sunday, March 20. The Flyers will play Ferris State at 2 p.m. and St. Francis at 4 p.m.
