WINTER PARK, Fla.--The Lewis University softball team began its spring trip in Florida with a doubleheader against Rollins College. Playing outside for the first time this season, the Flyers dropped a pair of games to Rollins. The Tars (9-7) defeated Lewis 5-0 in the opener and then beat them 10-2 in five innings in game 2. "This was our second day outside this season," said Lewis head coach George DiMatteo. "We practiced for a couple hours the day before, so we've been on the grass and dirt for two days. We just broke down on every level today. It was a disappointing start to the trip, but we've got 10 more games left on our trip, so we'll improve from here." Lewis (3-5) committed eight errors in the doubleheader and only four of the 15 runs it allowed were earned. Offensively, the Flyers were held to two hits in game 1 and combined for eight hits in the twinbill. Carla Musillo and Kalynn Russell led the Flyer offense with two hits apiece. Musillo drove in the team's only runs of the day with a two-run single in game 2. Kristen Porzel shouldered the loss in game 1. She went 5 2/3 innings, allowing an earned run and striking out five. Ashley LeGrand took the loss in the nightcap giving up six runs, three earned, in 2 1/3 innings. The Flyers return to action tomorrow night when they face Florida Southern, the nation's No. 1 team, in a double header at 6 p.m. |
