Feb. 13, 2004 FLORENCE, Ala. - The Lewis University softball team opened the 2004 season against a familiar foe, Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Northern Kentucky, and fell to the Norse 3-1. The Flyers (0-1) struck first with a run in the early going. Freshman catcher Kristy Vanek reached on a hit-by-pitch and was pinch run for by freshman Beth Shelus. Shelus advanced to second on a walk by Sarah Straughn and later scored from third on an RBI groundout by sophomore Amy Yusko. Northern Kentucky (1-0) came back with a run-scoring two-out single by Rachele Vogelpohl that tied the game 1-1. The Norse took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run single from All-GLVC first baseman Angie Lindeman. Mary Jaszczak (0-1) pitched with a sore foot and took the loss. Jaszczak went the distance giving up seven hits and just one earned run. |
