ROMEOVILLE, Ill.--Junior Loren Pellizzari recorded a trio of goals in a blistering first half as the Lewis University women's soccer team defeated cross-town rival St. Francis 5-0. The Flyers (2-2) romped to a 5-0 lead in the first half with Pellizzari tallying her first career hat trick and Caroline Kenny and Kim Jensen adding scores also. Pellizzari netted her first goal of the year at 8:24 on a shot from 12 yards out. She added her second and third goals at 31:17 and 37:06, respectively. Junior transfer Devin Owens assisted on Pellizzari's last two goals. Her second goal came from 25 yards out, while her final tally was a rebound off of her own miss. Pellizzari's hat trick is the first by a Lewis player in five years. Lily Alcala and Jenny Bourn were the last to accomplish the feat when they both turned in hat tricks in a 12-0 defeat of IPFW Oct. 2, 1999. Kenny, a senior forward, pushed the Flyers' lead to 2-0 after scoring on a penalty kick at 15:03. Jensen's goal gave Lewis a 3-0 lead at 22:38. Kenny added assists on Jensen's score and Pellizzari's first goal. Goalkeepers Courtney Hutt and Lindsay Frederick combined for the shutout. Hutt played 70 minutes and registered three saves. Frederick played the final 20 minutes and did not face a shot on goal. Lewis outshot St. Francis by an 18-7 margin. The victory avenges a 4-1 loss to the Saints (2-2-1) last season. After playing their first four games on the road, the Flyers will host their first home games of the season this weekend. Lewis will face Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11 and then play Grand Valley State at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12. |
