Sept. 29, 2004

Box Score

ROMEOVILLE - Freshman forward Anthony Marsico's goal early in overtime lifted the Lewis University men's soccer team to a come-from-behind, 3-2 win over Mercyhurst (Pa.) Wednesday afternoon.

Marsico's game-winner, his team-leading fifth goal of the season and second of the game, was scored 2:10 into the extra period. Cathal Brady and TIto Lara were credited with assists.

The Flyers, ranked No. 2 nationally and No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region in this week's NCAA Division II polls, are 10-0-1 overall and 2-0 in overtime contests this season. Mercyhurst, tied for No. 4 in the Great Lakes, slipped to 7-2-1.

Marsico, with a Brady assist, gave Lewis a 1-0 lead at the 19:20 mark. Mike Blythe scored his team-leading ninth goal for Mercyhurst on a penalty kick at 29:46, and the 1-1 tie held until intermission.

The visiting Lakers led 2-1 on Jason Pedra's fifth goal of the season (Jeff Oblock assist) at 65:31. The Flyers' relentless pressure in the waning moments was rewarded when, following a scramble, Justin Sanabria knocked in a loose ball at 89:00 for his fourth goal of the season and a 2-2 deadlock.

Jordan Gustman made four saves for Lewis and Marty Ruberry made six saves for Mercyhurst.

The Flyers travel to Kenosha, Wis., Sunday for a Great Lakes Valley Conference showdown against archrival Wisconsin-Parkside. The Flyers are tied with Quincy for second place in the GLVC at 3-0-1.
