Game 2 Box Score

ROMEOVILLE - Lewis University senior right-hander Kevin Jakubauskas tossed a masterful two-hitter and teammate Jim Gabriel drove in two runs as the Flyers toppled 23rd-ranked Saint Joseph's 3-2 Wednesday in game one of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.

GLVC leader Saint Joseph's bounced back in the nightcap for an 8-0 victory.

Both runs off Jakubauskas (3-5) came in the first inning of the seven-inning contest and were unearned. He allowed a single in the opening frame and another single in the fourth after retiring eight Pumas in succession.

Jakubauskas, who struck out five and walked only two, mowed down nine more SJC hitters in a row following the second hit. He induced a game-ending double play with the tying run aboard in the seventh.

Lewis scored all its runs with two outs in the fourth. Phil Marchinski drew a one-out walk, went to second on a ground ball and advanced to third on Brandon Niewinski's infield hit. Mike Smith's single scored Marchinski and, after Victor Naut walked to load the bases, Gabriel delivered a single that plated Niewinski and Smith.

Niewinski added another single and Kevin Tyrrell doubled for the Flyers, who outhit Saint Joseph's 5-2.

Lewis (8-32, 6-22) managed just four hits in the nightcap off two Saint Joseph's pitchers. Billy Duffy had a double and a single, and Dave Tolchin collected two singles.

Saint Joseph's (26-11, 18-4) scored two runs in the third, one in the fifth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth. Only four of the Pumas' runs were earned.

The Flyers play non-conference doubleheaders at Oakland City (Ind.) Saturday and Sunday.
