ROMEOVILLE - Billy Duffy collected two hits in the opener and Dave Tolchin did the same in game two, but stellar pitching propelled Bellarmine to a 4-0, 3-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference sweep over Lewis Saturday afternoon. Lewis starter Kevin Jakubauskas (1-4) turned in a solid performance in game one, allowing 10 hits and one walk while striking out four in six innings. Adam Stabosz fanned two in a scoreless seventh inning. Bellarmine scored twice in the second and twice more in the third, and that was more than enough for Micah McNatt (1-4). McNatt allowed a leadoff single to Duffy, then retired 16 consecutive Flyers before Duffy delivered another single in the sixth. The Flyers produced just those two hits and a walk. Lewis' Joe Walsh and Bellarmine's Chris Cahoe hooked up in a pitcher's duel in game two. The Knights (8-17, 3-7 GLVC) fashioned a two-out rally and scored two runs in the sixth to break a scoreless deadlock, then added an unearned insurance run in the ninth. Walsh (1-4) struck out nine and allowed six hits and two walks over 6 1/3 innings. Tim Harmatys yielded two hits and a walk and fanned three in 2 2/3 relief innings for the Flyers (4-20, 2-10 GLVC). Cahoe (1-1) went the distance and gave four hits and two walks while setting down eight Flyers on strikes. The teams meet again Sunday in a doubleheader that starts at noon. |
