RENSSELAER, Ind. - The Lewis University baseball team lost a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Saint Joseph's Tuesday, falling 3-1 in the opener and 12-1 in game two.

Jim Gabriel and Victor Naut each had three hits in the twinbill for the Flyers, who fell to 4-18 overall and 2-8 in the GLVC. Conference leader Saint Joseph's improved to 11-6, 8-0.

Lewis starter David Scheibe (0-1) pitched well in game one. Scheibe went the distance (six innings) and allowed two earned runs, three hits and five walks while striking out two. The Flyers outhit the Pumas 5-3.

Trailing 2-0, the Flyers cut their deficit in half with a run in the fourth inning. Mike Smith drew a one-out walk, moved to second on Gabriel's two-out walk and scored on Mike Loprieno's single. But Saint Joseph's added an insurance run in the sixth and held on for the win.

Lewis took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the nightcap. Gabriel led off with a single, advanced to second on Billy Duffy's sacrifice and scored on Smith's two-out single.

The Pumas responded with the tying run in the bottom of the third, scored the go-ahead run in the fourth and tacked on four in the fifth, three in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Gabriel added a double in game two and was joined by Smith and Naut with two hits apiece. Starting pitcher Tommy Rawski (0-3) absorbed the loss. Reliever Nicholas Woolworth was the last of five Lewis pitchers and was the Flyers' most effective hurler, pitching 1 1/3 innings of hitless baseball.

Lewis hosts Bellarmine in a pair of GLVC doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. Game time both days is noon.
