EDWARDSVILLE - Southern Illinois Edwardsville exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second inning Sunday and defeated Lewis 10-5 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball game shortened by rain to 4½ innings. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled. Lewis (9-15, 3-6 GLVC) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Andy Sweet scored on a wild pitch and Victor Naut drove in Ahren Baranski, who had doubled, with a groundout. SIUE cut the Flyer lead in half in the bottom of the inning, but Lewis answered with two more runs in the second. With two outs, Matt Flavin's single plated Andy Radak, who had walked, and Chris Carbonaro was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Sweet, who had singled. The Cougars (7-17, 4-7 GLVC) scored all five of their second-inning runs with two outs off Flyer starter Matt Petrusek (3-4). Luke Humphrey's three-run homer was the big blow. Lewis cut the SIUE lead to 6-5 in the third. Darryl Jenkins and Matt Newquist singled to start the inning and moved up on Radak's sacrifice. Jenkins scored on Mike Smith's sacrifice fly. SIUE added three runs in the third and one in the fourth, then got three outs in the top of the fifth to make the game official before the rain came. The Flyers host Indianapolis Wednesday in a GLVC doubleheader. Game time is 1 p.m. |
