ROMEOVILLE - Lewis fell victim to Southern Illinois Edwardsville's strong pitching Saturday and lost a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader, 1-0 and 5-1, to the visiting Cougars.

The Flyers' Kevin Jakubauskas (1-3) suffered the tough-luck loss in the opener, going the seven-inning distance and allowing nine hits and no walks while striking out four. SIUE scored the game's only run in the first when Craig Ohlau doubled with one out and scored on Jeff Darnall's two-out single.

SIUE hurler Kyle Jones (4-1) fanned 13 while giving four hits and no walks. Brandon Niewinski had two hits and Billy Duffy doubled for Lewis.

In the nightcap, the Cougars (9-4, 4-2 GLVC) tallied single runs in the first, third and fourth and plated two runs in the second off Flyer starter Jon Guzzo (0-4). Guzzo went six innings and allowed three earned runs, nine hits and a walk.

The Flyers (2-16, 0-6 GLVC) scored in the second. Phil Marchinski led off with a double, advanced to third on Dave Tolchin's groundout and scored on Victor Naut's two-out single.

Marchinski added a single and Jim Gabriel doubled for Lewis. David Scheibe pitched two scoreless innings and Tommy Rawski tossed a scoreless frame in relief of Guzzo.

SIUE starter Cameron Cheek (3-1) allowed three hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter in eight innings.

The Flyers and Cougars conclude their four-game series with an Easter Sunday doubleheader that begins at noon.
