ST. LOUIS - The Lewis University baseball team received strong outings from starting pitchers Kevin Jakubauskas and Jon Crettol in Sunday's 4-1, 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader loss to Missouri-St. Louis.

Jakubauskas (1-2) went the distance (six innings) in the seven-inning opener and allowed just two earned runs, five hits and two walks while striking out four. In the nightcap, Crettol (1-2) fanned seven in 7 1/3 innings and yielded two runs (earned), six hits and two walks.

Lewis (2-14, 0-4) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one. With one out, Brandon Niewinski singled, stole second and scored on Phil Marchinski's single down the left-field line.

Missouri-St. Louis (12-3, 4-0) tallied three runs in the second and tacked on an insurance run in the third. Chad Sherman (1-1) allowed just three more Flyer hits after the first inning and did not walk a batter.

In game two, the Rivermen scored the only runs they would need on a two-out, two-run double in the third. The Flyers plated a run in the fifth off Dan Kriegshauser (2-1) when Mike Smith was hit by a pitch leading off, moved to second on Jim Gabriel's sacrifice, advanced to third on Brian Clancy's infield hit and scored on Billy Duffy's two-out single to left.

Kriegshauser went the distance and gave six hits, including two by Clancy, walked nobody and struck out four.

The Flyers host GLVC opponent Southern Illinois Edwardsville in doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. Game time is noon both days.
