KENOSHA, Wis.-- - The Lewis University swimming teams set seven schools records and clocked 16 NCAA qualifying times at the Carthage Invitational Dec. 3-4. The Flyer men placed fifth among eight teams, while the women finished fourth out of eight. Lewis' men broke seven school records, had 10 NCAA B-cuts and an NCAA A-cut. The women recorded five NCAA B-cuts and narrowly missed several more. Sophomore Michael Lapustin guaranteed himself a spot at the 2005 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships when he won the 100 backstroke in a school-record 51.15. The time was an NCAA A-cut and automatically qualifies him for nationals. It will mark the second consecutive year that Lapustin has earned a trip to nationals, and will be the third straight year the men's team will send a representative. In addition to his A-cut, Lapustin had B-cuts in the 200 individual medley (1:54.71) and 200 backstroke (1:53.31). Both swims established new school records, while his 200 backstroke time bettered the previous record by three seconds. Lapustin added a fourth school record to his weekend as a member of the 800 freestyle relay team. Josh Rogers, Adam Bidlack, Kurt Niemeier and Lapustin teamed to swim a 6:59.99 to place second and shatter the old school record by seven seconds. Rogers, a senior, had a productive weekend as well registering three B-cuts. He won the 100 freestyle (46.98), placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:43.89) and finished third in the 50 freestyle (21.49). Sophomore Jevgenijs Pesins, sophomore Adam Bidlack and freshman Adam Brown each had a B-cut swim as well. Pesins recorded a 51.70 to finish second in the 100 butterfly and claim a B-cut. He also set the school record in the 200 butterfly with a 1:57.86. Bidlack claimed three B-cuts as he placed second in the 500 freestyle (4:39.84) and first in the 200 freestyle (1:43.19). In the 1650 freestyle, he swam the first 1000 yards in 9:46.55 to earn a B-cut in the 1000 freestyle. Also, His 500 freestyle time shattered his own school record by 10 seconds. Brown earned his B-cut with a school-record breaking 16:41.34 in the 1650 freestyle. On the women's side, senior Rita Kalmikova led the way with two B-cuts. She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.30 and registered a double when she won the 200 breastroke in 2:23.91. Her 200 time missed an A-cut by .42 seconds. Senior Brittany Reetz clocked a 53.40 in the 100 freestyle to finish second and earn a B-cut. Junior Leigh Dodd led off the winning 400 medley relay with a 1:00.38 100 backstroke that was good for a B-cut. The relay comprised of Dodd, Kalmikova, Michelle Sliva and Reetz won the event with a 4:01.32. Dodd also had a B-cut in the 200 backstroke as she won the event in 2:08.65. In addition, each Lewis swimmer had at least one season-best swim at the meet. |
