Feb. 15, 2004 SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Brittany Reetz added her second A-cut during the championships and became the fourth Lewis woman to win an event at the Central States Championships. Reetz clocked a 52.43 in the 100 freestyle that beat the next closest finisher by 0.4 seconds. The men's team won its first Central States event championship in team history with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay. The squad consisting of senior Matt Petrizzo, Michael Lapustin, Jevgenijs Pesins and Josh Rogers swam a school-record 3:07.21 that won the event by 0.63 seconds. For the fifth straight year the Lewis women placed third at the Central States Championships, while the men's team placed sixth for the fourth straight time. Lewis' men scored 279 points, the most-ever at the Championships in program history. Freshman Michelle Sliva set her second school record in as many days as she swam a 2:11.77 that qualified her third in the 200 butterfly and gave her a B-cut. Josh Rogers finished second in the 100 freestyle with a B-cut 46.51. Leigh Dodd earned a B-cut in the 200 backstroke with a 2:11.34 that placed her sixth heading into the event finals. Jevgenijs Pesins broke Lewis' oldest men's swimming record with a 1:59.56 in the 200 butterfly that broke the old record of 1:59.73 held by Patrick Caldwell. Caldwell had held the record since Feb. 19, 2000. Pesins then lowered the record to 1:58.26 in the event finals. Michelle Sliva set a school record and qualified ninth in the 100 butterfly during the morning session on Friday. Sliva swam a 1:00.30 to better her own record by .14 seconds. Brittany Reetz swam a 1:56.98 in the B-Final of the 200 freestyle to earn a B-Cut in the event. Jevgenijs Pesins recorded a 51.70 for a B-cut in the 100 butterfly Friday night; he finished fourth overall in the event. Jenny Byers bettered her best 400 IM time by more than 10 seconds with a 4:48.98 that placed her third in the B-final. Brian Mikalauskas turned in a personal best 1:16.84 in the 100 breaststroke that topped his previous best time by five seconds. Josh Rogers clocked a 1:44.39 in the 200 freestyle to better his B-cut time by .01 seconds. He is the No. 2 seed heading into Friday night's evening session. Matt Petrizzo qualified fourth for the 200 freestyle final with a 1:45.10. The men's relays continued to shatter records as the 200 freestyle relay (1:25.24) and the 400 medley relay (3:29.63) teams established new school standards in the respective events. Michael Lapustin, Matt Petrizzo, Jevgenijs Pesins and Josh Rogers teamed up to set their third school relay record in as many tries at the Central States Championships. The 400 medley record was bettered by nearly six seconds. Brittany Reetz swam a school record 24.17 in the 50 freestyle and earned an A-cut in the event finals Thursday night. She placed second in the event. Matt Petrizzo set a school record with a 1:58.15 in the 200 IM. He bested his own record by more than a second. The men's 200 medley relay shattered the school record by 1.52 seconds. Michael Lapustin, Matt Petrizzo, Jevgenijs Pesins and Josh Rogers comprised the record-breaking squad. They teamed up to break the record (1:37.15) they set Dec. 6 this season with a 1:35.63. Josh Rogers (21.51) finished third in the 50 free, while Michael Lapustin swam a 21.57 for fifth place. Marissa Andrews swam a career best 26.56 in the 50 free. The time bettered her top time from last season by nearly two seconds. Michelle Sliva swam a 2:14.59 in the 200 IM and placed seventh. |
